Qualcomm, during its annual Qualcomm Summit 2019, has launched two new chipsets for laptops and PC portfolio. The brand has announced Snapdragon 7c and Snapdragon 8c compute platforms during the on-going event.
Qualcomm says that the latest chipsets are meant to redefine the PC segment with lightning-fast cellular connectivity. The latest processors will now join the previously announced Snapdragon 8cx, which is meant for laptops and PC. Qualcomm has revealed that the latest chipsets will power laptops in 2020. With this, the company is all set to give a stiff competition to Intel and AMD.
“Qualcomm Technologies’ innovation in smartphones and connectivity placed the power of your desktop PC in your phone, now the phone is returning the favour by bringing thin, light, always-on, always-connected, all-day battery life experiences to your PC,” said Alex Katouzian, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile, Qualcomm Technologies.
The Snapdragon 7c compute platform is meant for the entry-level devices and the company claims that it brings a 25 per cent boost in system performance. The latest chipset features octa-core Qualcomm Kryo 468 GPU that is clocked at 2.45GHz. When it comes to the GPU, it is backed by an Adreno 618 GPU.
The major highlight of the Snapdragon 7c is the new Qualcomm AI Engine that delivers over five trillion operations per second (TOPS). This improves the AI performance on Windows 10. The chipset is made using 8nm process. The chipset is loaded with integrated X15 LTE modem that offers Cat 15/13 speeds of up to 800 Mbps download and up to 150 Mbps upload speed.
The chipset is also loaded with Qualcomm Spectra 255 image signal processor. It comes with connectivity options including WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and dual-frequency GNSS support.
Coming to the Snapdragon 8c, the latest chipset is built using 7nm process. The company claims that the latest chipset offers up to 30 per cent over the Snapdragon 850 chipset. The processor comes loaded with integrated Snapdragon X24 LTE modem that provides multi-gigabit connectivity speeds for smooth cloud computing experience. Just like the Snapdragon 7c, the Snapdragon 8c comes with Qualcomm AI Engine that comes with six TOPS to accelerate machine learning and powerful performance. Furthermore, the chipset will allow manufacturers to make ultra-thin, fan-less design for their upcoming laptops.
The Snapdragon 8c comes loaded with an octa-core Kryo 490 clocked at 2.45GHz. The chipset comes with Adreno 675 GPU. Furthermore, it is integrated with Snapdragon X24 LTE modem and the company is also giving an option to pair it with Snapdragon X555 5G modem for 5G connectivity. This means users can experience download speeds of up to 7 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 3 Gbps with the latest Snapdragon 8c processor.
For security, it boasts improved crypto-security, remote management and location awareness. The chipset supports 2133MHz LPDDR4X memory and it comes with eight channels. For storage, it supports NVME SSD and UFS 3.0 options. The Snapdragon 8c comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology for fast charging.
